The Oracy Book Packs focus on spoken language. Each book pack has several language activities based on that book. Each book pack tends to offer a general ‘talk about’ section to help children focus on the theme, a puppet activity, a language game, a barrier game, and a memory game.
The following activities then specifically focus on sound, word, sentence, and text level language. For example, at sound level there may be a rhyming activity, at word level the activity may be learning about adjectives, and sentence level may look at listening comprehension or creating complex sentences. Text level provides activities such as a social language activity for developing friendships, sharing personal narratives about different feelings, explaining how to play a game, or comparing two different animals. Finally, most of the book packs will also have a text innovation, where the story is transformed from perhaps the Bunyip of Berkley’s Creek, into a story about The Yeti of Mount Everest.
Each book pack provides the lesson plan explaining each activity with a set of visual resources children can cut out and colour in.
This book pack focuses on friendship and the sense of "being different". There are language activities based on the book that look at describing words, antonyms and synonyms, listening comprehension, and completing the sentence "I'm special because ..." The social language task looks at what you might say to some-one who says they are feeling a bit sad; what can you say that is kind, to encourage, compliment, or show that you care about them.
This book pack looks at adverbs and verbs, formulating complex sentences, and creating original similes (e.g., as sleepy as a koala). There is also a listening activity to consider statements about the story, for children to decide if it is true, false, maybe, or I don't know. At the text level there is a text innovation to look at the things kids do at school each day of the week and also considers cause-effect language structures.
